Bachmann re-issued the Graham Farish PGA aggregate hopper wagon.
N gauge, 1:148 scale model.

Bachmann continues to re-issue items for the original Graham Farish range with improved painting and finishing. The latest releases are bound to please the modellers who wish to replicate aggregate traffic on their layouts. The building boom of the 1970s forced the construction industry to look to remote quarries to satisfy the huge demand for crushed stone and rail provided the answer for bulk aggregate distribution. As part of long term contracts, British Rail insisted on the provision of company owned or leased wagons. The design for two axle hoppers featured air brakes, pedestal or other modern suspension types together with bottom hopper discharge. Most variants of the PGA can be traced back to the first design by Charles Roberts, built in 1972 for hire to Foster Yeoman. Other builders include Standard Wagon and Procor.

Bachmann’s re-issued PGA wagons are available in five different liveries:
  • Original and revised Foster Yeoman versions
  • ARC (Amey Roadstone Company) with its distinctive mustard yellow livery
  • Tarmac Roadstone featuring the attractive brown and white livery with Tarmac letting and logo
  • Redland Aggregates in pale green with red lettering
  • British Industrial Sand (BIS) livery of white with yellow stripes
  • Railease.
It is pleasing to note that the BIS version features different end plates to protect the air brake equipment whereas its aggregate cousins feature different end covers and a small platform. However, a standard underframe has been used which is taken from the PCA bulk powder wagons. Taylor Plastic Models offers a detailing kit which comprises of etched end covers, walkways and end platform hand rails. A white metal casting representing the hopper doors is also included. These models are popular given that they have been part of the freight scene since the 1970s and modellers will welcome these re-issued versions.

Produced in 1:148 scale, 9mm gauge.
