n-gauge coupling(1) doomtube 22/02/2010 23:59:59 | | having returned to the hobby after many years away i plan on making a 'micro layout' in the inglenook style in n-gauge. I would love to have electro-magnetic coupling so i can coupl/uncoulpe the rolling stock from the shunter with out touching the models. I know this is possible but the internet is a mine field! could any one point me in the right direction? is it possible to do this by adding the little metal clips to the standard n-gauge coupling or does all this need to be changed?

n-gauge coupling(2) Paul 23/02/2010 10:19:14 | I am not an N gauger, but the commercial coupler system I have seen at shows, which is smaller than the Arnold Rapido design generally fitted as standard to Farish and other UK N, and which couples and auto-uncouples very efficiently, is by Micro-trains. This used to be part of the Kadee operation, the coupler also functioning as a buckeye type, but is now a separate business. The last person I talked to who used this system (on a layout which performed superbly, lots of shunting in a large yard) reckoned it the best thing available. He stressed that great care has to be take in mounting the couplers at uniform height, and smooth tracklaying is essential, but given this attention it then really delivers.
I use the Kadee product in OO, and would say the same of this, although obviously the larger scale makes life a bit easier. It actually looks like a prototype coupler too which is helpful to the appearance of models. I believe that Bachmann are planning to do something in this direction on their Farish product too, there are already coupler pockets for coupler change on some UK N product for a start.

n-gauge coupling(3) doomtube 23/02/2010 22:05:03 | cheers for the info i'm thinking straight along those lines! I wonder though if any one has actual experience of converting a standard farish to a kadee... Any way i plan on going to alexander palace for the show and picking brains all day!!
also i got a litt 0-6-0 mintrix second hand to day... whats the best way to maintain it....?
