To keep things going(2) Neil 14/07/2010 13:30:39 | I tend not to actually pre-order things because I'd prefer to at least get a view of something before I part with money. It's much less of a lottery now with models than it used to be, but I just feel an urge to avoid buying something which turns out not to be what I expected.
I do, though, make use of Hatton's facility for being notified when new items come into stock. It helps to know and since there's no obligation to buy, if I don't feel like forking out on whatever it is when it appears no-one's the worse off for it.

To keep things going(3) vespa 14/07/2010 15:21:57 | | Well, I said I wasn't going to do it but the Bachmann A2 Blue Peter is due soon so I have pre ordered it. (Naughty boy!!) | |

To keep things going(4) Albert Hall 15/07/2010 10:09:09 | The only things I have ever pre-ordered were some Bachmann BR brake vans. They were ages coming but Hattons did have the courtesy to send me an e-mail asking me if I still wanted them when they became available.
On a slightly different tack, does anyone follow the financial markets? There has been a lot of talk lately about China allowing the value of the Yuan to rise, taking away some of their competitive edge in world trade. Could this sound the end of cheap(ish) manufacturing from that part of the world?

To keep things going(5) fatwindsurfer 15/07/2010 13:25:48 | I actually ordered a Baccy 04 2.8.0. from a friend who works in a model shop (gets a bit of discount). I had to pay £5 postage. Total when it arrived was £10 more than I could have got it on line!
I think I'll wait and see with the announced S & D JR 7F 2.8.0!!!!
RE markets; I gave up on that many years ago when I found out just how much I was being ripped off by brokers!
What goes around, comes around I says! Bring the manufacturing back to the UK! They can then offer me a job!

To keep things going(6) Albert Hall 16/07/2010 10:21:25 | Good sentiment Phil. I wonder if the price of a RTR loco were to go up to £200 that it could actually be good for the hobby because more people might be tempted back to scratch and kit building, i.e. proper modelling as we used to know it.

To keep things going(7) Andy 16/07/2010 12:19:00 | As a UK manufacturer, with some components coming from the Far East, I can tell you that exchange rates over the last year have had a massive impact on us with the imported components rising in price by about 30%. Eventually we will have to pass this on, probably around the same time as the VAT increase.
In an ideal world we would source ALL of our components from Great Britain, but that is probably a discussion for other places.
Not so sure about Bert's scratch-building idea. But I think folks like DCKits would do all right!
