Edinburgh's Waverley station has been a prominent feature of the Scottish capital for 150 years, and is celebrated here with an emphasis on photographs dating from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s. Rather than a large volume describing every corbel and pillar of this magnificent edifice, the author presents several short, atmospheric chapters featured around a fine selection of black & white images from The Transport Treasury. Most of the illustrations date from the 1950s and feature the 'Waverley Pacifics', 'Scotts' and 'Glens', 'Shires', 'Moguls', V2s & B1s, seen in and around the great station, plus some of the humbler but very necessary 'pilot' locos. The magnificent buildings, vast overall roof, the associated landmarks, nooks and crannies do, naturally, get a look-in and there is also a feature on Edinburgh's cable tramway and the services serving the station. Diesels do just get included, but this is essentially a celebration of the great station during the latter steam era and as such builds to form an overall picture of a great location in an earlier age. The book was launched at Waverley itself, and while the station remains impressive, the trains serving it today do not really promote the same inspiration.
