For many years, railway modellers in 4mm scale have been asking for an accurate RTR LNER coach, in teak or BR condition. What’s been on offer to date has been rather unsatisfactory and at best near-misses. Up to now that is, for the first of Hornby’s latest LNER 61’-6 Gresley ‘teak’ coaches is shortly to be available. When representatives of the model press first saw the coaches, along with the new A4, at the NRM on September 28, we were later-built, 65’-0” sleepers lasted a long time, some even into the early ‘seventies when they allowed to take away just one carmine/cream example each. The one I got was the Sleeper First, one of the subjects of this review. A week or so later, the BR-liveried BCK arrived in the office, and this is included too. As already mentioned in BRM, five different types will be on offer initially - in teak or early BR carmine and cream. These will be a Corridor Brake Composite, Corridor First, Corridor Third, Buffet Car and Sleeper First. From initial sightings at York, all appear to have a very high standard of finish and detail.
